Our History

Over 60 years of rich musical history

Introduction

Armthorpe Elmfield Band was founded by Haydn Griffiths MBE in 1964 from 2 players and 6 instruments. The band was formed to give everyone a chance to become involved in music particularly children. The band soon became affiliated to the youth service and at one time the junior section of the band had over fifty members. From humble beginnings the band grew as a result of one man’s lifelong dedication, vision and passion for teaching. Haydn introduced brass music to hundreds of students over the years, many of whom still play for bands, or are still active members of his beloved Armthorpe Elmfield Band to this day. Armthorpe Elmfield have gone from strength to strength throughout their years, with a string of successes.

Highlights & Successes

- Led a 40th Anniversary Miners’ strike parade along with the Doncaster & District & East Yorkshire Pipe Band visiting Hatfield colliery along the way and ending in Stainforth. - We also led a similar parade at Armthorpe the following week, its always a pleasure to play in our local village. - Performed for Radio Sheffield on the Paulette Edwards show for a “look at the community special event” - Played at Brodsworth Hall for over 200 people on a few occasions when we are selected to play. - Armed Forces Day - Played on the pitch at Rotherham United, one of our members Nigel Herbert also played the Last post for the silence before the game. - Performed for Doncaster Knights Rugby Club, at Castle Park on the field and for the crowd. This was great fun. We also continue to entertain here each Christmas as we have done for over 20 years at the last home game of the season. - We are also the only brass band that regularly play in Hexthorpe Flats at the Dell. This is an amazing bandstand, and the band is always well received - Joined the “Boobs and Brass” band at Armthorpe Community Centre for a breast cancer charity night – this was hosted by our Trustee Alan Barber. - We’ve also played at weddings for both band members and for private bookings, these are always special events, and we look forward to playing at the next one in June for one of our local parish councillors. - Our sell out 60th Anniversary Concert at Armthorpe Community Centre – this was attended by many retired players. It was a great night, and, on this evening, we were joined by The Wheatsheaf Choir. - A highlight each year is leading the Armthorpe Remembrance parade

2018 to Present Day

In 2018, Armthorpe Elmfield Band performed at the launch of One Man and His Band, a book written by trustee Alan Barber celebrating the life and achievements of our long-serving Musical Director, Haydn Griffiths MBE, Freeman of Armthorpe. This would prove to be one of the final events led by Haydn, as his health sadly began to decline soon afterwards. Recognising the need for continuity, Haydn appointed Ray Kilcoyne as his successor. Taking over from such a respected and influential figure was a significant challenge, but Ray embraced the role with enthusiasm and determination, leading the band into a new chapter while preserving its strong community spirit. Following Haydn’s passing, the band paid tribute by performing outside his nursing home and later at his funeral. Former players and friends from across the brass band world, including members of the world-famous Black Dyke Band, joined us in celebrating his life. The funeral was conducted by Professor Nicholas Childs, Musical Director of Black Dyke Band and a long-standing friend of both Haydn and Armthorpe Elmfield Band.

In February 2019, the band hosted Black Dyke Band at Doncaster Minster for a sold-out tribute concert in Haydn’s memory. More than 600 people attended the event, making it a fitting celebration of his remarkable legacy. One of the highlights of the evening was when Armthorpe Elmfield Band joined Black Dyke Band on stage for an encore performance of Highland Cathedral, a moment still fondly remembered by many members today. Haydn’s influence continues to strengthen the friendship between Armthorpe Elmfield Band and Black Dyke Band. The band has regularly participated in the annual Black Dyke Festival, where players attend workshops led by Black Dyke musicians before joining together in a spectacular massed band performance. This remains one of the highlights of the banding calendar. March 2019 saw the band compete in the Yorkshire Area Regional Finals in the Third Section, performing Gustav Holst’s First Suite in E-flat, arranged by Sydney Herbert. Although the band finished 10th, the performance was supported by several returning former members and remains our most recent contest appearance. As 2019 drew to a close, the band continued a busy schedule of concerts and community events, but membership numbers began to decline due to changing personal circumstances, relocations and health issues. The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic created further challenges, with many players reassessing commitments and younger learners losing momentum during lockdown. Despite these difficulties, the band remained active. During the latter stages of lockdown, members collaborated remotely to record Above Waters by Gavin Bryars. Individual parts were recorded separately and combined with vocals from Reads Warblers to create a unique and memorable performance. Since then, Ray and the band have worked tirelessly to rebuild, focusing on enjoyment, musical development and community engagement rather than contesting. As we approach 2026, those efforts are paying off. Membership is stronger than it has been for many years, with new players from a wide range of backgrounds joining the organisation. Armthorpe Elmfield Band continues to grow, entertain audiences and proudly represent the local community while looking forward to an exciting future.
